Our favourite indie coffee shops

Coffee, that elixir of life that makes Monday mornings (or any mornings...) tolerable.

The whole country has seen a surge in the opening of independent coffee shops, rivalling the big chains that pump out the stuff by the gallon and we thought we'd share which ones we frequent and spend our (very little) spare time in...

Java Lounge

Colmore Row, Birmingham

After launching the first Java Lounge in Moseley in 2004, company founder Akram Almulad has now expanded into the former Hudsons right Starbucks.

The Grade I listed building is stylish with wood and leather furniture to match but practical too with plenty of places to plug in laptops if you have time to linger.

We may also be a bit bias as this joint is a stones throw from our Colmore Row office...

Cherry Reds

John Bright Street, Birmingham

Anywhwere that serves an all day cooked breakfast is a star in it's own right and Cherry Red's do a cracker!

The John Bright Street site makes wonderful use of an old building – it resembles a time warp crossed with a homely, nook-filled second hand shop and the furniture is so ill-matched it goes together perfectly, especially in the upstairs’ front room which has great views of the street, A great place to spend an autmunal Saturday morning...

Pelham Street, Nottingham

Wired are big fans of their equipment. They have a La Marzocco FB70 and two Mazzer grinders which may be part of the secret to their delicious coffee. It's smooth and has a deep flavour no matter what form it comes in, whether you fancy a flat white or a long black.

Their coffee menu (which you'll find online or in the shop) shows the ratio of coffee, milk and water in your order. It's a visually simple way to explain something that is confusing to lots of people!

200 Degrees

Flying Horse Walk & Carrington Street, Nottingham

200 Degrees are another coffee shop that roast their own coffee. 200 Degrees have everything on offer, from drinking the coffee in the shop to taking classes on how to make it.

They have a barista school in their Flying Horse Walk branch. You can learn everything from the perfect latte art to taking part in a home brew coffee class. If you just want to drink it, then pop along to one of the two city centre locations and enjoy a smooth rich cup of Joe.
