5 things to do in Birmingham for Mother's Day

The big day is nearly upon us again! Mother’s Day will be taking place on Sunday 15th March, and if you’re struggling for ideas on how to make it a memorable occasion then stop worrying. We’re here to help! We all know Birmingham is a wonderful place to live, but it’s also a great place to spend a day with your old mum!

Here are five things you can treat your mother to in Birmingham:

1)   Shopping

Retail therapy rarely fails to work wonders! Here in Birmingham we’re lucky to have a wealth of great shops, both independent stores and large branches of the nation’s most famous brands.

The main shopping hub of Birmingham is of course the Bullring, and the clever folks working over there are taking full advantage of Mother’s Day with some great offers! Among the many deals is an event at Selfridges. You sip on a glass of prosecco while your mother enjoys a treatment from her favourite beauty counter. Which leads us neatly on to idea number 2…

2)   Pampering

You won’t find many people out there who don’t love to be pampered, so treat your mother to a bit of indulgence on her special day! Massages, manicures, facials – all of these are likely to be well-received! There are plenty of spas dotted around Birmingham for you to choose from. The Westbourne Centre in Edgbaston, for example, has a range of Mother’s Day offers, including half price treatments.

3)   Catching a show

Birmingham is truly one of Britain’s great cultural cities, and there are few better places to take in a show.

As far as cinemas go you have a multitude of options. You can go to one of the high tech multiplexes dotted around, or you can go to a cozier picture house. The Electric is the UK’s oldest working cinema, and the brand new Everyman Cinema in The Mailbox offers a luxurious setting.

Is your mother into a more classical form of entertainment? We’re also blessed to be home to a variety of theatres, including The Rep, the Hippodrome, the New Alexandra and The Crescent. Not all of these theatres actually have shows on the Sunday in question, but you could still present the tickets on the big day, maybe over a meal or a glass of wine…

4)   Wining and dining

Famously, Birmingham is home to a whopping four Michelin-starred restaurants, while Manchester and Liverpool are yet to gain their first.

If you don’t think your pallet is quite refined enough to appreciate such fare, don’t worry. TripAdvisor currently lists 1,564 restaurants in the Birmingham area, of every cuisine available, so you won’t exactly be struggling for options. Take a little look down the top rated restaurants here and see what catches your eye!

5)   Going for a walk!

Did you know that Birmingham has more miles of canals than- oh, never mind. Of course you do! So why not take advantage of them and go for a lovely walk along the water (weather-permitting)? Alternatively, if you want to get a bit further out of the city, you could head to Sutton Park. It’s the seventh largest urban park in the whole of Europe, and the second largest outside a capital city. It’s also an official National Nature Reserve, and features on English Heritage’s list of recognized historic parks.

Wherever you choose to grab that fresh air it's true that sometimes a bit of quality family time, without any distractions, is the most fun thing of all!
