The future home

<< GO BACK

It’s been an interesting few millennia. From cave dwellings through to huts and castles, into terraced and detached. Homes are a staple of human development, the better formulated take on a shelter that also acts as a personal space away from other humans. An accepted form of anti-social activity perhaps?Pod homes

Moving back to the 21st Century, much of Western television often highlights this aspect of global culture. There are programmes that follow families or couples looking for a new home. There are others that are essentially makeover shows. There are even those wherein people are fortunate enough to receive a brand new home.

We won’t waffle on and detail the obvious. Most people already know what a home is and what it contains. What we want to discuss today is the future of homes? What can we expect?

With an ever-growing population over limited landmass, and with resources diminishing as each year passes, the decisions that are made about housing have to be made with considerable care and knowledge.

Architects across the globe are undertaking this momentous task. Ideas have ranged from thin homes between walls, to homes without floors. Homes have been built on top of other buildings.

What do you think would be the best strategy to provide homes for a growing and aging population?

Many eastern countries have adopted a pod-culture wherein the domestic domicile is self-contained and small in space, with much of the occupying individual's life taking place outside and within the social setting. Will we as a species need to become much more sociable and engaged in a community ethos in order to ensure everyone has a roof over their heads?
