Sizzle with style with these kitchen summer trends

<< GO BACK

The kitchen is the most important room in the house because it’s where the fridge is, so it’s no surprise that interior design for the kitchen is always a hot topic. There are a number of decorating and design concepts trending this season, ranging from classic favourites, to some pretty cool emerging innovations. With kitchen upgrades topping homeowners' list of renovation projects in 2014, we delve into four of the latest trends that will have your kitchen summer-ready in a heartbeat.

1.    Texture reigns supreme this year, with a focus on reclaimed woods, and rustic finishes.

Lighter, honey-colour woods such as walnut, oak, and cherry are now popular with kitchen cabinets. Wood floorboards are getting wider and are now cut from several tree species for a raw and natural effect. Styles also have shifted from traditional and detailed to more transitional and mid-century modern to give a kitchen a more timeless look. Teamed with natural wood, we’ll be seeing a lot more sleek styles and clean lines.

2.    Grey is the new black in the world of kitchen interiors.

We’re seeing a major shift from the shine of slick black and white, to warmer grey tones. From dove to charcoal, even tones mixed with inky blue or navy, the coolest new shade for kitchen design is grey. This look is as versatile as it is trendy. If you have beige walls, switching to warm grey is easy, yet impactful. This may mean stepping out of your comfort zone, but we can assure you that you’ll love the finished look!

3.   Open shelving is another hard-hitting kitchen trend we’ll be seeing plenty more of.

Kitchen cabinets used to be the place to stash dinnerware out of sight, but now kitchen crockery has become a statement piece. Eye-catching kitchen accessories have become fashionable, from dishes to pots and pans to gourmet oils and vinegars, the trend is to show off as much as possible. While still in its infancy, we’re expecting to see this trend grow quickly with more designers and manufacturers implementing open shelving over the next season. The downside of this – keeping on top of the washing up is more important!

4.    Prominent lighting has a new place in the kitchen.

Quality lighting is essential to any room, but now it can be more stylish thanks to more elaborately executed fixtures so readily available. We’re now seeing a move back to exposed, sconce lighting. The trend is all about rustic metal fixings, copper and brass for the rest of the home too - lighting fixtures have become showpieces in themselves!
