Earth Day 2016

Earth Day

Earth Day is an event which seeks to mobilise people all around the world, with the common goal of promoting environmental awareness. To do our part here at Centrick Property, we've identified a few quick and easy ways in which you can help the environment from inside your own home.

1) Recycle

When you're taking the rubbish out, it only takes a little extra time to sort the recyclable items from the rest, but over time you can do your part to help reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills.

2) Compost

Alongside recycling, this is another way to cut down on what goes into landfills. Rather than putting your leftover food into a plastic bag, you can use it for compost. For a list of common items that are compostable, and a quick guide on how to create your own compost bin, head over here.

3) Charity shops

Another great way to reduce the amount of harmful waste you generate is to donate unwanted clothes and items to charity shops, rather than throwing them out with the rest of the rubbish.

4) Insulate your home properly

By properly insulating your home you can reduce the energy that's lost by 20-30%. In doing so you'll be helping the environment, and keeping more money in your pocket!

5) Line dry

We don't live in the best country in the world for line drying your washing - that's a given - but if it's nice outside then hanging your clothes up to dry, rather than using the washing machine, is a great way to save energy.

6) Spray less

When it comes to pest control, prevention is the best way to go. Take basic steps to keep the pests away from your home, such as keeping your kitchen crumb-free, rather than using environmentally-harmful bug sprays.

7) Turn off your electronics

When you head off to work in the morning, or before you go to bed at night, don't just leave all your electronics on standby. To ensure that you're being as environmentally friendly as possible, turn everything off at the socket.

8) Light bulbs

You've all surely heard this one before, but if you haven't switched to energy-saving lightbulbs yet, now's the time to do it! Lighting typically accounts for around 14% of a typical household bill, and by switching bulbs you'll save yourself money in the long run, at the same time as helping to cut down on your impact on the environment.

9) Turn off the tap

Just like turning off your electronics when you're not using them, this is an incredibly easy way to save yourself money, and to be more environmentally-conscious. So next time you're brushing your teeth, turn that tap off!

10) DIY

When something starts to malfunction or completely breaks, don't just take it to the tip and dump it. The internet is full of great how-to guides to help you fix everything from remote controls to radios. Again, you'll save yourself money, and help to reduce waste which is very harmful to the environment.

If you're interested in cutting down on your environmental impact in your own home, these tips are easily-implemented and a great starting point. To find out much, much more about Earth Day, head to www.earthday.org/.
